Shanghai: Building the International Exhibition Capital, to be Fully Completed by 2025!

Recently, the "Three-Year Action Plan (2023-2025) for Promoting the High-Quality Development of the Exhibition Economy and Building the International Exhibition Capital in Shanghai" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan") was officially released. By 2025, Shanghai's exhibition resources will further enhance its global capabilities, and its global influence and international competitiveness in the exhibition industry will be further strengthened. The market mechanism will be more mature, exhibition enterprises will be more dynamic, and brand exhibitions will gather more, achieving the comprehensive completion of the International Exhibition Capital.

According to the "Plan," by 2025, the total exhibition area in Shanghai will reach approximately 22 million square meters annually, with international exhibitions accounting for 80% of the total exhibition area. The number of exhibition projects with a single exhibition area of over 100,000 square meters will reach 50, and the exhibition grade will continue to improve. The number of exhibitions selected as the top 100 global exhibitions will be at the forefront among major exhibition cities worldwide.

Market entities will be more concentrated. By 2025, the number of institutions striving to obtain certification from the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) will exceed 35. Two to three exhibition groups with international competitiveness will be cultivated, and the operation capabilities of major exhibition venues will be further enhanced, attracting a group of specialized exhibition supporting service enterprises.


The steps to acheive:

1. Continuously enhancing the exhibition grade. By 2025, the total annual exhibition area will reach approximately 22 million square meters, with international exhibitions accounting for 80% of the total exhibition area. The number of exhibition projects with a single exhibition area of over 100,000 square meters will reach 50, and the number of exhibitions selected as the top 100 global exhibitions will be at the forefront among major exhibition cities worldwide.


2. Concentration of market entities. By 2025, the number of institutions striving to obtain certification from the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) will exceed 35. Two to three exhibition groups with international competitiveness will be cultivated, and the operation capabilities of major exhibition venues will be further enhanced, attracting a group of specialized exhibition supporting service enterprises.


3. Continuous highlighting of industrial linkage. Establish a "exhibition+" integrated development concept of cross-industry linkage, innovation-driven, and open ecology. Make efforts to create new advantages in "exhibition+industry" and continuously amplify the comprehensive driving effect of the exhibition economy by promoting the coordinated development of high-end professional conferences and brand exhibitions.


Shanghai has always attached great importance to the development of the exhibition industry. After years of efforts, Shanghai's exhibition industry has formed significant comprehensive advantages, with multiple indicators ranking first in China and among the leading exhibition cities in the world. Since the beginning of this year, the exhibition industry in Shanghai has shown strong momentum of recovery. From January to May this year, the exhibition area of major venues in Shanghai reached 5.33 million square meters. 


Overall, Shanghai's exhibition industry has strong resilience, great potential, and vitality, and the long-term positive fundamentals remain unchanged.
